What Happens When You Say Yes to Volcano?

Four years ago, Joaquín Fernández arrived to Volcano Summit as a volunteer.

He didn’t know it at the time, but that decision would become one of the defining moments of his life.

Today, many of the opportunities, relationships, and projects that have shaped his journey can be traced back to a single ecosystem: Volcano.

“I can pin it back to a specific moment,” he says. “That’s when I started getting involved in the Volcano ecosystem.”

What followed was a series of connections that opened unexpected doors.

He began as a volunteer. Later, he became Head of Volunteers. Then he led Volcano Startup Avenue, Volcano’s platform for emerging entrepreneurs. Eventually, he joined the company that won the startup competition, and years later, found himself building a new project alongside a friend he met through the community.

What sounds like a quick summary is actually four years of growth, leadership, and transformation.

But for Joaquín, the story isn’t really about titles.

It’s about discovering what he was capable of becoming.

“Volcano was a place where I learned that I had a lot of leadership in me. It showed me that I was able to create impact in other people.”

That realization changed everything.

More Than a Summit

Today, Joaquín continues to build projects centered around education, entrepreneurship, and community.

He is part of the team behind MetaHumanos, an EdTech initiative born in Guatemala that helps young people across Latin America unlock their potential through transformative learning experiences. Throughout his career, he has worked in startup growth, taught entrepreneurship courses, hosted conversations with innovators and builders, and shared ideas through content and public speaking.

While the projects have evolved over the years, a common thread runs through all of them: a belief in the power of people, ideas, and meaningful connections to create change.

And perhaps no experience reinforced that belief more than Volcano.

The Power of Connection

For Joaquín, the lasting impact of Volcano comes from the relationships and opportunities that emerge through the community.

He discovered that some of the most meaningful outcomes are impossible to predict in advance.

A volunteer position becomes a leadership role.

A conversation becomes a career opportunity.

A connection becomes a partnership.

A community becomes a catalyst.

That is the power of an ecosystem built on trust, generosity, and shared purpose.

Every Role Matters

One of the most inspiring parts of Joaquín’s story is that it didn’t begin on a stage. It began with service.

His message to future members of the Volcano community is simple:

“It doesn’t matter if you’re an attendee, a volunteer, or someone working behind the scenes. Whatever role you have in Volcano, you can make a lot of things out of it.”

At Volcano, participation is never passive. The community is built by people who show up, contribute, collaborate, and remain open to possibility.

Sometimes all it takes is saying yes.

The Echo Continues

When asked what comes to mind when he thinks about Volcano today, Joaquín’s answer is immediate:

“I don’t want to miss it.”

Not because it is an event.

Because it is a community.

A place where people discover new opportunities, build lasting relationships, and find the confidence to take their next step. The Summit may last only a few days, but the connections, lessons, and experiences continue long after it ends.
